HOW TO NAIL YOUR TABLE SETTING EVERY TIME
Hosting a dinner party can be a stressful event! Between decisions about courses, managing food allergies, matching wines and ensuring your soufflé doesn’t end up as a puddle, the last thing you want is a last minute freak out about your table settings.
Setting your table should be a mix of both function and flair representing both your own personality and the season at hand.
Don’t be afraid to embrace nature
If it’s Autumn and the beautiful coloured leaves are falling, use a branch as a table centerpiece. If it’s summer and the frangipanis are blooming, opt for a summery and fresh look with frangipanis tied onto your serviettes or floating in a bowl as your centerpiece. If it’s winter, adding a sprog of rosemary across your serviettes adds not only an elegant touch but a beautiful aroma to the table.
Just like using seasonal produce in your cooking, use what is right on your doorstep and you can’t go wrong.
So now, what goes where?
As with everything in life, having a cheat way to remember your settings is the way to go. And for table settings, here it is: start from the outside and work your way in. What you serve to your guests first is eaten with the cutlery on the far left and right of the plate.
The Basic Table Setting
Once the dinner plate is place start adding…
To the left: dinner fork closest to plate
Far left: Salad fork
To the right: Dinner knife
2nd on the right: Salad knife
Far right: Soup spoon
Front of plate: Dessert fork
Far front of plate: Dessert spoon
At head of dinner knife tip: Water glass
To right of water glass: Wine glass
If serving red and white, these are placed to the right of the water glass with the red wine glass first followed by white wine glass.
At head of forks on left: bread plate with butter knife across plate
Napkin can be placed to the far left or across the plate.
What everyone will remember long after the meal is eaten, is not whether they received the right fork or butter knife, but whether the evening was a memorable one full of soul-enriching food and fabulous company.
